For the past few weeks the back has been mainly wonderful! I am a bit upset now that the holiday is over. The back is giving me the nod. Holiday over...
I have been sleeping really well, not surfacing until after 7:00am or even later. However I have had to take sleeping tablets the past few nights to drop off. Ah well, it was nice while it lasted.
It actually started for me at a tutorial on Wednesday. I had been reminded at lunchtime that the back is not nice, but towards the end of the tutorial I had a real nasty shock. I may have made a bit of a fool of myself... But unfortunately there is little I can do about that.
I hope I will be able to go to the club today! but I will have to wait and see!
An ex Lab Technician, Production Control Engineer, TA Soldier, Cook, Electronics Maintenance Engineer and Teacher. Now I'm an Arts student with the Open University. I never expected that.
The Future
I once read that you should take each day as comes. I never fully realised what that meant until I managed to get my head straight again after my Implant on 20/01/09. A massive reduction in Oral Painkillers! I now can take each day as it comes, as the brain is working again!
Some days are bad (physically) and some not so bad. But each day is an adventure and I intend to make the most of it, no matter how I'm feeling. Another saying may be applicable - Don't let the bastards get you down! I will not let my handicap get me down.
I now find myself looking forwards to each day, no matter how I'm feeling, as it's pointless looking back, so I'm taking each day as it comes. The Good and the bad.
Pain Scores are all measured out of 10. With 0 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain imaginable.

This has been a strange week! Good game last Sunday at the club, but I couldn't manage Tuesday as the back didn't want to go out! However the studies have come together well as I have sent in my first OU assignment over a week early and I'm quite pleased with that.
The Health has been very variable during the week and I have been able to work one day, but not the next. My feelings of cold have been quite serious! The slightest cold on the back and I am laid up, for hours! In the end I have had to start buying Thermal Underwear! Sexy or what?
One final thing this week that has really upset me. Because of my isolation from the world of work I have a pretty crappy social life. One thing that has been brillient over the last year or so has been monthly Pub jaunts with four of us in attendance. A genuine 'mates' night out. Or so I thought. I was shocked to find one of our number feels unable to attend any further nights as he cannot stand the way we behave! Except the rest of us take the jibes and just dish it back. No problem. I was amazed to discover that a 'good friend' could not tell other 'good friends' that he was having a problem and wanted them to calm it a bit... I could never be like that, as I have to call it like it is...
Ah well, who needs a social life?
Well I do actually so I am really upset by this! But then again, that's life!

Wow?
Pain Level at this time is 4
I have been up since just before 6 this morning so not to bad. Yesterday I had a meeting with the Solicitor and the Barrister and it was a bit of a problem as it is proving difficult to replicate the accident. Ah well! We'll just have to wait and see.
Unfortunately I left without putting me woollies on and ended up with the back not being happy! Because of this I was unable to go to the club for my arranged battle. However I was still able to beat Denise at Wii sports. That was good.
We are going to see the new baby today. Our Neice, Deanne, had her new son on Sunday! Little Nathan. I'm looking forward to it...

Cold Back
Pain Level at this time is 3
The pain is quite reasonable at the start of the day, but I have realised that being able to withstand the cold is now a thing of the past! I used to like the feeling of a brisk, cold day! However as soon as the back gets the slightest chill at all, I end up in serious cripple mode. I have bought a 'thermal' to wear and it is doing something at the base of the back. It is keeping the important part warm, but...
I have never been happy with being constricted, always rolling my sleeves up when possible. The thermal works really well, but makes me feel 'claustrophobic! Never mind, you can't have everything.
I had a good time yesterday with Stewie at the club, but he beat me.... Not a nice person at all. LOL! I have planned to play Tony on Tuesday and a bigger game next Sunday with auld Stewie! I intend to beat the bugger next time! If he lets me, :-)
I am looking forward to the next Tutorial now and this time we will be covering good old Cézanne! I am genuinely surprised at the way I have enjoyed the art so far! I only hope that the cold does not cause me too many problems, as far as the journey and attendance are concerened.
Fingers crossed!

Day after the Tutorial before?
Pain Level at this time is 6.
I went to my first Tutorial last night and have ended being a part time cripple now. The pain has gone high and I cannot think of any reason why, apart from the tutorial! Maybe I sat still for too long. Maybe my wheelchair was positioned wrong and I was too twisted. However I am going to have to sort it as I can't have this every time...
I am totally unable to anything today and it is causing me some problems. I am waiting for a delivery and cannot therfore go to bed, which is what the brain is telling it I should do!
Therefore just a short one as it is getting too painful to continue!

Funny Weekend!
Pain Level at this time is 4
Not a bad start to the weekendas I woke up on Saturday feeling pretty good. The pain was a bare 2 and I have not had that for quite some. All bodes well for later as I was due to be going out with the lads that night! I went out with Denise for the day and when she went looking for new curtains for the sitting room (The old ones are over 25 years old and Denise thinks that it would be nice for a change). While she did that I went by myself to do the food shopping. Good one. On the way home got a slight twitch, but that was OK as it didn't get a grip. I may be lucky this weekend.
Went out with Mike, Phil and Dave. Paid for the Whiskey Dave got me from Scotland. Snice... We had a good time at the White Owl. I picked up Dave and Mike and was really pleased with the place. We decided not to wind Phil up this time and to be just nice normal people. I think that was the best windup we have ever done on him. He was really perplexed by it all and asked Dave what was going on at the end of the night. Talk about a laugh!
When I got home Denise was still up so we stayed up to watch Strictly, I was crying at the antics of Ann and Anton, and didn't go to bed until almost 2:00am. The latest to bed for about 5 years. I didn't get up until 8 the next morning. Some sort of record. Good weekend so far.
On Sunday lunch time got sorted for the Club, but the back must have had enough of me being happy and enjoying myself. I had a bad twinge and it peaked at 5. I still got ready with Denise telling me that I could wait and that was the reason for phones.... I ignored her advice and left to pick up Stewie. Bad mistake as I ended having to turn around at the 'big' roundabout. I got back and had to ask Mike to pick up Stewie.
That afternoon Denise went to her Mam and Dads for tea, but I had to stay home again. Never mind, saved me from having to go... :-)
Got a call from Mike later to tell me what had been going on at the club. I was pleased for that as I had really wanted to go, but then again, what can you say...
Back to Faustus today almost finished! Surprised at how much I enjoyed it...

Nice when things evetually seem to work.
Pain Level at this time is 3.
The pain has subsided a bit now as this has been a far from pleasant period. I was at the club on Tuesday night and was really looking forward to battling against Paddy. However the fun began when everything was set up and the back nudged me.
"Are you trying to enjoy yourself Phil? Well feel this"
Wham, both my Right leg (Right leg never gets a bad one?) and my left arm and shoulder. I felt like a harlequin!
I had to come home and take my sleeping tablets yet again... I am seriously annoyed by that.
However, last night I managed to sleep without pain killers and that was nice. I woke at 4:30 but was able to get back to bed and I actually was able to lie in a reasonably comfortable position, not getting up until almost 7. Yes I said 7! Nice, in fact I could not believe it...
I have finished the first part of my TMA01 for the Open University, but I'm still tweaking. I have enjoyed it so far and I'm looking forward to the Tutorial... The question was set at 500 words and I have managed 504!
I am also getting the mailing, at last, for the MS Office 2010 promised. But have not yet heard from the people about the drive for my computer.
Ah well you can't have everything!
Yesterday my dearest got her new phone and she is so pleased! The thing is pretty good, as it is the HTC Desire. I wouldn't mind one myself, but that is a bit silly. Even paying the extra cost of 'as you go', last month was expensive at about six quid! Which is high for me. So going for anything like the contract Denise has would be daft and not economical! Ah well, must be because no body loves me enough to call me! ;-)

What a nice finish to the Week End!
Pain Level at this time is 6
I have had a really nice week end for various reasons. Good company, good fun and therefore a good time. However I ended with the nasty, due yet again to this bloody back of mine. I was at the club with Mike and enjoying it very much. We were playing a game of War machine and it was going well, until Mike cheated by winning the game by using underhanded techniques. He threw a good die roll! Shouldn't be allowed...
However when tidying up the bits 'n' pieces I was horrified by the suddenness of the pain. I had to go and sit by myself for a minute or two to try and get it under control. However I know that I was causing some problems on the way home as for safeties sake I was doing about 50 or so on the dual carriage way. They must of hated me those drivers behind...
Drugs for bed! Ah well.

Relaxing day!
Pain Level at this time is 3
I was up three times last night and had a bit of a disrupted night. Mike and Judith were round for the Sabbath meal last night. It was enjoyable for both of us to have them here! We all had a great time, apart from yours truely falling asleep later in the evening. It gave the rest a laugh trying to get me to talk in my sleep!
Got up at about 6 and woke Judith around 8 for her to get to the synagogue in time. I made a start on undercoating some models I have had for a while and got them all done. Really pleased with that.
When Judith got back I cooked for them all again and we all settled down for a nice relaxing afternoon!
All in all a nice weekend so far. If the back lets me down I'll kill it. LOL!

All go now! I have my Tutorial dates.
Pain Level at this time is 4
Bit of a good one as the e-mail has arrived from my Tutor along with the dates of the tutorials. Northubria as expected, thank Dog. However the first one is not until the 13th of October. So we can probably expect Cleopatra to be the first discussion topic. S'easy, that's all of my Wednesdays taken care of... Well 10 between no and the end of April next year...
Back not that goodfor the past few days and had to take sleeping tablets last night. Missed Judith coming home. She is going to the Synagogue at this time and will be staying with us for a couple of nights. So I'm cooking the Sabbeth meal tonight. Fun to do, but I don't know if Mike with enjoy the veg, but I am adding a couple of Yorkshire puddings to make him happy!
Should I do the TMA now?

Not bad, not good!
Pain Level at this time is 4.
Just a quick one this time as I am finally getting to grips with the course as I have had an e-mail from my Tutor! However the pain has increased a bit and I had a bad time with getting out of bed this morning! I am having to take things easy so, that's it for today!

Bloody back!
Pain Level at this time is 4
I started the undercoating for mike for his new war gaming models! Ran out of paint... After a telephone call he came round with two cans. While he was here, I mentioned something about the models I was busy doing and he came through to look! On the way back through the garage I had the pain attack! Quite severe! Michael had to help me sit. I couldn't move for the next hour and had to ignore the cats need for food! I couldn't manage to do anything for him until the cat jumped into my lap, three times! I was then able to get up and feed him, using my helping hand, as it was the the lesser of two evils (Or should I say the lesser of two pains?)
I couldn't eat last night and and ended going to bed with my sleeping tablets to get the pain under control. Foxy, my Polar Bear kept me busy for the night.
The pain is not as bad this morning, but is far from pleasant...
Ah well, life goes on! No OU today, unless the pain reduces!

Trying to get to grips with the Equipment¬
Pain Level at this time is 3
It is somewhat disconcerting to get all the equipment I have now. I can understand how some people will find this a bit of a difficult time trying to sort everything out. What annoys me most however is the fact that my equipment is also with a computer, but minus the wonderful DVD drive. So playing DVD's is impossible.
I am going through a ripping system to put the vids on the hard drive, but so far I'm finding it difficult to do. For the cost of £20 to £40 I find this a bit strange to say the least...
I had a good time yesterday at the War Gaming club. Enjoyed not playing but talking to Tony. It was actually a good day!
Got up late this morning. Almost 7:00am. Not going out so that's OK! I am going to spend the day getting to grips with everything, but also wanted to do some work on models for Mike. However I ran out of Paint, so Mike may well call in after visiting my dad!

A Busy Day!
Pain Level at this time is 3.
I have had more than just a busy day I had a busy day and a half in fact! On Thursday afternoon I had the fun of the Trick Cyclist, who has said that a definitive diagnosis of being an aspie is impossible for an adult who has learned all the coping strategies that an adult can. But the tests and the descriptions I have had applied, point to a 99% certainty of me being on the Autsitic spectrum. The doc agrees!
An aspie I must be, an aspie I must be, eee-o me daddy-o, an aspie I must be...
The Doc explains the fact that I am very high functioning. The signs and symptoms that Denise, Mike and Hayley have all noticed in the past, well basically the diagnosis did not come as any sort of surprise!
Yesterday morning I left early to go to the hospital for my 'Top up'! I got there earlier then expected and was able to get the one handicapped bay by the front door. I went into the new building to ward 16. Quite a push in the wheelchair. The ward was empty and the door locked. I was a bit annoyed. I rang the Pain number and got through to the ward clerk who came up to show me the way back to ward 39. They had not bothered to inform me of the move back...
I was settled in quite early and saw Doctor Wilkinson. I asked if I could be scheduled as soon as possible as he told me I was first on the list and everything was sorted. I was happy with that, but I had obviously forgotten about the luck of the Nelson!
About 20 minutes after the first talk we had the second. The department had mixed up the order and the Morphine was not ready for the procedure. I had to be back home for the Barry Bennet delivery, from 12 noon to 2. I was a bit pissed to say the least and ended up coming home. If I could get sorted then get back before 12:30 they could sort me on the morning list. Fine! However if I waited later I might have to wait until the end of the afternoon list, 6 or even later... Great fun. Especially since I had been up since 6:00am and I had also been on the road since 7:30!
I was lucky to get help from Mike and got back just in time to go down for the morning list.
Lying on the table in the operating room I knew I had some time before I could get back home but wanted to reduce the time if I could, so I asked for the procedure to go ahead without local. Not a problem until the needle got bent against the pump. He had to feel around for the correct position three times. between attempts straightening the needle. However half an hour later I was leaving the ward for the car, feeling a little bit on the sore side. LOL!
Got home two minutes before the delivery. Everything fine apart from the fact that the PC is driveless. How do you load software? How do you play CD's DVD's etc? I have applied to the OU and the DSA people for an answer. Seems silly to be in this position. New puter, but basically a glorified type writer, when it could be so much more...
Never mind, Mike bought me a Pizza, so I'm a happy chappy. The pain did peak yesterday at a 5 for an hour or two. One of lifes little pleasures.

Late night equals late morning!
Pain Level at this time is 3
Started at a pain level of 5 and I couldn't move my hands much at all. Not a pleasant way to go to the toilet! :-)
Went to the club last night and played a game of 40k against Tony the maestro! Nids are terrible beings to battle against, almost as bad as battling against Tony! I didn't just lose, I was massacred! Ouch! LOL!
Spent the best part of yesterday sorting the sun room out for my use with the OU course. Had a laugh as well replying to the headless chickens again.
Denise is off today and she has decided that we sort the Kitchen, after she goes out and gets her new phone...
Why does she want a new phone? especially since the old contract is not up for another month.... She wants to transfer her number, but may not be able to, as the contract is still running!

Almost back to a Norman week!
Pain Level at this time is 2.
Very good start to the day as I am feeling quite good and I didn't get up until almost 6:00am. I intend to get my room at the back of the garage sorted and I want to prepare a full dinner for Denise coming home tonight.
I also want to go to the club for 5:30 or 6:00! So I need to get a move on and not just waste the day.
If I get all done today, Denise is off tomorrow so we can get the other bits organised. then I'll get the chance to go fishing on Thursday. The rest of the week is quite busy...
I can't believe I'm feeling so good! Be careful Phil, as we all know the back is just waiting to trip you up...

Double Oops this time!
Pain Level at this time is 3.
I have been a bit lax with the old posting, but I'm back now. Posting later in the day as I slept well, 6:20am, and had some bits 'n' pieces to do before going off for the first health visit of the week! I have had to have a second test for my Liver function due to the anti fungal drugs I am taking. I have stopped taking it now so should be back to normal!
I have a further two visits this week. I am back to see the Trick Cyclist on Thursday, I must remember the forms again. I also have my 12 weekly cycle of tops ups for the Implanted drug pump I have. But that is not until Friday! Busy day Friday as I have the top up and then the OU peeps are coming to show me how to use computer. That should be good for a laugh.
Yesterday went to the club with Stew and had a game with Paddy, but unfortunately the back wanted to remind me that I cannot enjoy myself too much! It did the old spasm bit. Stew had to finish the game for me! We drew!
Last night I got really p!&&*d with the silly ongoing posts on the AA100 site forums about, help and support, again and again and again. Always the same thing! I decided to write with a new thread! I asked if I was the only sane person doing the course? I was amazed at the response... Still ongoing!
Any way will have to wait and see what happens. I intend to do the study amd TMA start sometime this week! If I can be bothered! ;-)

Too busy to write!
Pain Level at this time is 3
Naughty boy for not writing! Used to hear that a lot but didn't mean anything. However since starting this blog I promised to write one every day, just like keeping a diary. However when you end up being a busy person and other things come up, then I can begin to realise that although I enjoy writing the blog, other things are more important to me.
Thursday was busy and eventually ended with a meal at Mike and Judith's. Very nice too. We all had a great time and had really enjoyed the whole thing. Since picking them up at Newcastle airport I had not really stopped. No complaints.
Yesterday we went to see Brian's Cousin, Tricia, at the Hospice. Surprisingly good place. We had an upbeat time. This was the second day that we had visited.
Before picking Brian and Denise up, I had been in the house sorting the room at the back of the garage, when my neighbour knocked. The new netbook bought for his wife refused to work and again he had been trying very hard for two days to sort things. I wish he would ask for help and advice before he gets into trouble.
I got the thing working with a network cable plugged in, but not without. The wireless was working, fine, but not connecting. Time to call in the 'mainman' computer wise.
Mike came, talked to it and sorted withing 15 mins. Smart arse! LOL :-)
Went to the Falcons for a meal with Brian, Denise, Denise and Mike. Snice. Ended back at the hotel and got home about 11:30. All in all a very nice day.
Today could be busy as well, as Hayley is at the Parachute centre and Brian is off to Stanley to see some cousins for a meal, so we are going along with Hales and Mike. We will be visiting Tricia later. So again a busy day.
It's always very busy, when Bri is up! But then again, he always has a lot to do every time he is here! Busy man! I will miss him when he goes home! The ugly bugger!

Brian & Denise
Pain Level at this time is 3
Brian and Denise are due at the airport this morning. at about 8:30. We are all going to Mike and Judiths for a meal tonight. Will have to try very hard not to enjoy myself too much ;-)
I have decided to take an OU break as it is silly to get too far ahead. The equipment is all coming through on the 24th, the same day I have to go into hospital for my 'Top Up'! Almost like putting petrol in the tank! Can morphine be counted the same as petrol? Well I suppose it keeps me going by controlling the pain, all though you wouldn't think so after the past few weeks.

Relaxing day ahead! Yeah Right!
Pain Level at this time is 2
The boss is on a day off and that means...
He he! Trouble.
Went to club last night and no real problems from the 'Moron'. Don't worry it's a term on endearment. I haven't named the person so no one can complain. Enjoyed the new gaming system.
Brian and Denise tomorrow so an 8:30 pick up... at Newcastle airport. Going to Mike and Judiths for meal with them tomorrow night.
I am still amazed by the headless chicken routines on the OU site. Do people not read the information given? I think the answer must be NO!

Trying to get a good nights sleep!
Pain Level at this time is 2.
I took my painkillers and sleeping tablets late last night to try and get a good nights sleep so that I could sleep through until 7 or so. Instead I got a sleep through until after 8 and a thick head to go with it! I don't think I'll be trying that again. Ah well, one of life's little experiments.
Yesterday was very funny, reading all of the 'headless chicken' posts on the site within a few hours of it opening. Do people not read the information given to them. Never mind, one of those funny things!
I will be doing less of the forum reading once I start fully. The problem is that it would be so easy to start now and get a month or so ahead. However that would not do at all as when I do get a Tutor I will be to far ahead to gain anything from the experience.
Just found that Brian is coming up on Thursday with his Denise. Staying until Sunday. So I suppose I will have to partake of the odd whiskey or three. Good job I got the bottle from Dave the other day. Well we will just have to force the effort. LOL!

Early start again!
Pain Level at this time is 2!
Now there's a thing! Got up at 3:30 and went back to bed, however... I can't get back to sleep at all but the pain ain't too bad! So have to get up fully at 4:00 a.m. so as not to disturb the boss. Go figure! This is not fair.
The club was cancelled yesterday as Mike was on his way home and Tony has had the house fully pulled apart and reassembled. His thoughts are far from the club and more on the exhaustion of the past few weeks. Therefore no club.
However Mike came to ours and took the Cooking Fats back. I did suggest he take Max and leave the little black cat, but for some reason he wasn't reasonable. LOL! He did manage to down some dinner while he was here, but even that wasn't enough to bribe hime into leaving blackie!
Dave Nethercott arrived while young Michael was here. He'd managed to get a rather nice bottle of whiskey for me from his Scottish adventure. I don't mind helping out the Scottish economy with the odd bottle of single Malt. Tried some last night and all I have to say is "Slainte Mhath"!
Today the OU Site is due to go live... At last.
Do you think I may have an anti-climax on my hands?

Hoorah!
Pain Level at this time is 2
Ask me who slept until 8:30 this morning... Go on! LOL ;-o
Feeling quite good and looking forward to the day. The cats, however, have to go back to Mike and Judith. I have decided to keep the black one and give them back our cat instead. They might not realise? He he :-)
I am a happy chappy. I got an envelope from the OU yesterday with all of the course content in PDF format for me to put it on my Kindle. I am a happy chappy. I have also started the first course week and I'm letting the stuff perculate around enough so that I can do my best. I wish I had the voice recorder already... But what the hell. I have already got my lap desk and it is wonderful.
Any way, today is a great day!

Night time Painkillers.
Pain Level at this time is 3.
Discovered something during the night. I was able to get an extra 3 hours last night by taking my Diclofenac at 1:30am and the pain level decreased over the rest of the night and I didn't surface until 5:30. I have to try and do that in future, if I'm awake enough to do so...
Mike and Judith's big ginger puss had some sort of fit yesterday. We knew it happened, but I've never seen one before. a Bit frightening, the poor thing! The black one went to sit with him until he came out of it. Very strange...
Started the course yesterday, I couldn't resist.

Is a Back transplant possible? They did one on ST TNG!
Pain Level at this time is 5.
Woke and the pain monsters were hovering. This is getting beyond a joke as usually I get a small reprieve between bad bouts. However the damn thing is trying its best to P!$$ me off! Ah Well, life goes on. (But not as we know it Jim)!
The cats were all waiting desperately for food. With three cats in the house I feel like a bit of a recluse, once Denise goes to work. I spend the best part of my day talking to pussycats or winding up Lynn on Facebook! (Hello Lynn)!
I seriously must get a life...
The course draws ever nearer and I can no longer resist, so I plunge on into the the enigmatic life of the lady known to us as 'Cleopatra'. I really would love to have the equipment I'm getting so that I can practice with it, but I may as well start the work and get ahead so that I can have time, once the course starts, to do the 'equipment learning' as my content will be in advance of the requirements.
Ah well, Hello enigmatic one. So you're Cleopatra! I'm Phil pleased to meet you...

Easy day
Pain Level at this time is 4
Pain yesterday escalated to a 7 and I had to take my Sleeping pills. Not much fun. However I have woken feeling OK ish and want to take things easy so that I have no problems for tomorrow and the weekend. I will have to see.
The cats have settled down now and are eating OK. They normally take longer to get used to the place again, but it went quicker this time. Max and Saul touched noses and seemed to be getting on alright until Saul tried to lick Max's ears. Then the usual hissing and hackles appeared. However Max is alot more relaxed then usual.
I've decided on Chicken tonight for the Boss!

Pussycat Day!
Pain Level at this time is 3
We get the cats again for a few days. Prep time is required to make the house Pussycat proof. This is so funny when you think that we have a cat already, but Mike and Judith's cats are a force of nature... Especially the Ginger!
Had a good time last night at the wargaming club. The new game developed by my Son and my Nephew is really good. We had a great time with about 8 of us having a right battle royal! Mike likes to make things really 'interesting'! Brillient!

Stuck in the House!
Pain Level at this time is 4.
Denise let me sleep today, so I am still in my night clothes and have no way to get dressed to go out. Maybe I should start my OU course. No I'll resist! The 13th is not that far away now. That's when I find the site going live and hopefully get my Tutor!
Went to Mike and Judith's yesterday for a coffee and had a slice of the orgasm cake that she makes to my recipe. Unfortunately she used white chocolate instead of milk choc. Still nice, but I know what I like.
I may well do some baking this weekend, when the shoulder eases, fingers crossed! I haven't baked for a while and could quite fancy stocking the freezer. Radio four and a busy kitchen. Sounds great...
I'm hoping to go to the Wargaming club tonight to give the new game Mike and Stewie have come up with a chance to be played with a large group (the pain will have to subside a bit for that). Also the scenery controversy marches on so a support structure (me) should be in place.
So what to plan for tea, so I get a quick get away? Phil puts his thinking head on! Homemade meatloaf and roast veg. S'easy. LOL :-)

I want to sleep fully through one night without drugs!
Pain Level at this time is 3.
I still have the right hand shoulder problem, but is seems to be easing a bit. I am looking forward to the time when it is better again. My pain is quite good, but I have a numbness in my calfs at the mo. Rather strange sensation, but better then pain...
Went to the Wargaming club yesterday and watched a game of the 'new' system being played. Was good. enjoyed getting out for a change. I just realised that I have not left the house, apart from a bit of shopping with Denise, for almost a fortnight. It has not been a pleasant two weeks.
With this being the start of week two in September, the OU studies are getting closer and I'm getting excited. Sad or what? However if I use this week to sort out my bits 'n' pieces for the following week, then I can really get stuck in. Wish it was next Monday. LOL :-)

The Day of Rest?
Pain Level at this time is 4.
Up at 6 this morning after a really good nights sleep, however I am feeling a bit under the weather in general. Don't know why! I still have the pain in my right shoulder, but it is better then it was. Getting there slowly, but surely...
Went out yesterday to do the shopping and called in to Mam and Dad's afterwards. Everything seems OK!
Off to the club today, but I don't know what I want to do... We'll see when I get there!

The Weekend is Denise's Favourite part of the week.
Pain Level at this time is 4.
I didn't get up until 7:30 today. Feeling well rested, but the Right arm is still hurting and causing problems with the wheelchair. I can't self propel much at this time so I will have to take denise out with me for the shopping. I have no other choice.
Yesterday I called the OU. It seems the Disabled Student Allowance ( DSA ) that I applied for is sorted by central government. This is all taken care of centrally, but the OU has it's own office dealing with DSA at MK. It is the largest and most diverse university in the country and therefore has some of the highest numbers spread out over a very wide geographical area.
The woman I talked to was able to get back to me an hour after our conversation. I am accepted and the letter telling me so should be with me by the end of next week. All I really want is for the equipment to be with me sooner rather than later so I can get to grips with it! It would be better to learn and train before the course starts rather than trying to do so once the course itself starts. Well, we'll just have to wait and see.
I'm hoping that if I'm careful then the right shoulder may improve today. It means I have to be careful with the way I move etc, but to be honest I get bored not being able to do certain things... It's bad enough being in the wheelchair, but with the arms effected as well, I am somewhat P!$$&D.

Feeling low

I want to do something about my pain, but I can't. I woke up yesterday feeling sore but not bad. However the worst thing imaginable happened. I have the problem with the legs due to my back, and I have a problem with my left arm since the accident. Then the best thing imaginable happened, I strained my right hand shoulder. Oh joy!
To say this is a bad start to the day would be an understatement! I am frustrated about the health and the assessment from the OU has not helped. I have been recommended as a student with special needs, but I don't seem able to find anyone able to help me. I sent an e-mail and all that came back was the fact that it is being passed on to the correct people. Who? Where? When?
I am also a bit down about the mental health assessment. I am disgruntled that I may not be able to get the diagnoses I want. I really just want a definitive answer to my concerns. Without that one thing I feel that I will end up in a kind of limbo...
Check list for today.
1. Make the right arm better! (I don't know how, but I will try)
2. Get my head straight. (see 1.)
3. what to do about the OU? Contact the assessor!
4. Remember that we are going out tonight, so I have something to look forward too.

Unsure diagnosis
Pain Level at this time is 5
Pain is not nice this morning, but the pills have been taken and now it's the waiting game...
I saw the Trick-Cyclist yesterday and we talked about yours truly, etc! I have a repeat with him on the 20 something of this month? Got it written done somewhere! He suggested I try some online testing to see if I have Aspergers. I did two.
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/9.12/aqtest.html
and
http://www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php
The first has a limit of 32 for Aspies. I was at 37, 5 above the threshold. The second was marked out of 200. For an Aspie I got 136 and for being 'Nuerotypical' I scored 70. In all cases I am on the 'spectrum' but high functioning with a store of coping tactics that I have developed over the years. However each site has a rider saying that in adults it is difficult to diagnose due to the fact that it has been 'hidden or coped with' over a long period of years.
I will have to wait now for the second meeting and I can tell the doctor what the outcomes are and we cab see where we go from there. Denise did the second test and came out 28 for aspie and 176 for NT.
Slightly different. LOL :-)

I am going to the GP's today as at long last I have the appointment with the Trick-Cyclist. I am not sure what to expect, but I did ask for it to find out once and for all if I am in fact an aspie...
A reasonable day yesterday, but I am chomping at the bit with regard to the course. It is so hard not to start the actual work. But what the hell!

Nisey back to work!
Pain Level at this time is 3.
Yesterday was a really lovely day. We just sat and enjoyed some programs we wanted to see and talked a bit, generally enjoying the day as a whole. A bit of a tidy up and later, Denise did the usual magic trick. She was able to find a bar of chocolate that had magically appeared from that tame 'Black Hole' that she keeps tethered in the bedroom. I'm not privy to the placement of this amazing phenomena, but in the past I have seen it produce, biscuits, sweets, cakes. but mostly that wonderful material that we both enjoy eating, Chocolate!
I got up at three and decided to try going back to bed after half an hour. It worked as I went back without the CPAP Breathing machine. I slept until just after 6:00am. Hoorah!
The Boss is back to work today after the Bank Holiday. I am going to try and sort things to make studying easier for me. So I'll have to tackle some of the accrued rubbish in the back room and the 'Sun Room' at the back of the Garage. Oh joy!
I am going to continue with the library work at the OU to get myself in a position to do the actual course content without any concerns about peripheral parts. However I am still working with the Mac and have not yet heard back from the OU about the equipment that has been recommended for me. If I have not heard by Friday I will be contacting them directly. Just one more brick in the building that is required before Phil becomes an 'Historian'! LOL :-)
Seems impossible.... But what the hey?

Lazy day
Pain Level at this time is 2.
Isn't life wonderful when you can just be a lazy bugger and enjoy the quiet.
I am really wanting to start the OU course, but I still have no tutor, or other bits sorted. I don't know what the next 4 weeks will be like, but it really is important to just get the old head straight and do what I can in prep.
I think I will go fishing some time this week. Just ti chill!

I'm OK after a reasonable nights sleep. Got up at 6:30.
I'm not sure if we're going anywhere today, but then again it will give me a chance to do some more study activities.
Mike got back yesterday after his 'working hols' down London way showing a friend how to decorate his house.

Had to take my sleeping pills last night as I have not had a full nights sleep for a week now. So took them at 7:00pm. If I took them any later I would be too hung over for the rest of today. Can't remember after 8:00 last night but I woke up this morning at 6:00am feeling fully rested. Pity about the pain increasing slightly.
Not sure what to do about the course. I really want to start the thing, but I feel that if I do, then when the actual organised start comes around I will be so out of phase that I won't get anything out of the tutorials etc. I will have to organise that I do all of the peripheral bits n pieces to death, or try and organise something totally different to be done until the actual time.
The cats are funny. The big ginger is destructive as far as cardboard boxes are concerned. the container that the OU materials came in is now only suitable for a confetti parade. However I want to keep them, but Mike is due back today and I suppose he probably wants the cats back... I'll have to ask. :-)

Not a bad start to the Weekend. I really thought could manage the old 'Lie in' but no chance as usual. When I got up this morning I came through to the cats who where having a great time ripping up the box that my OU mailing arrived in. They seemed to be enjoying it. Both fed and watered, they are now doing the mad half hour run around.
Yesterday the posting arrived and I was so pleased. I got everything out and did the check. All there! I'm now starting to worry if I have bitten off more than I can chew. But then again there is only one way to find out. I'm busy working through the Course Companion and it doesn't seem that bad, but...
Ah well, the rollar coaster starts here.

Today's the day
Pain Level at this time is 2.
I managed to stay in bed until almost 6:00am to day, not bad. More numb then pain today. Painkillers should kick in by 7:00am.
It is not easy doing this with a Black Cat trying to get your attention. Sfun!
Max went out yesterday and has not been seen since. He doesn't like sharing with other feline persons, but what the hell. They are lovely, the two cooking fats...
Today is the mailing day. I am really hoping that the damn things come sooner rather than later. Keep the old fingers crossed.
Judith is staying tonight, so will have to share the cats around. I wonder if Max will be back by then?

Pain has migrated
Pain Level at this time is a four.
Got up this morning at 5:00 am. Feeling OK on the left side, but the right shoulder is feeling pain along with my right leg. Ah well, swings and roundabouts.
Nice today as we are getting the cats from Mike and Judith to look after. I can see it now, spending most of the day with a furry black thing on my lap. Do you think I'm looking forward to it. Betcha I am... Sad or what?
Just a day away from the OU mailing and the anticipation is getting really massive. Of course you have to allow up to 10 days for the delivery, but be positive, always positive. The pain will subside to my usual 2 and the posting will arrive by 10 tomorrow and I'll get 100% on my first and every subsequent TMA.
Yeah right!

There is live after pain...
Pain Level at this time is 3.
Well after two horrendous days, I am almost back to a reasonable pain level. Feels no worse than a toothache today, so that's OK. I have had two nights with sleeping pills and extra painkillers, but now I think that tonight it should be OK to sleep normally. Tomorrow will be a good day.
Only two days until the mailings are due to be sent out for the OU course. I wish it was the W/E and I had the first pack to play with.
I feel good enough now to actually go into the kitchen and cook a proper meal for Denise. In fact I might even do some baking... I have a new perching stool that allows me to 'perch' near the bench, stopping the pain from increasing too much while I am cooking. It is wonderful.
Catching up with the lists and mails that I sent out yesterday. 16 New friends on Facebook all doing the OU course. The an.....tici..... pation. is building. Hope it is not an anti-climax. Oh well, only time will tell.

Pain Level at this time is 4/5
I'll put up with this all day long, as I used to go to work when my pain level was up to a 5 or 6... I remember some of the classes where brilliant, with kids being so well behaved when Mr N was under the weather. Even some of the difficult classes where brilliant. Maybe that should be written into teaching courses from now on. Show your genuine pain level in class and see the kids become little angels. My Dog but I miss the teaching lark.
Shut up Phil, take whatever the world throws at you and smile.
A milestone as I have just made a friendship request to everyone on the Face book page that has been set up for the OU course I am due to start shortly. Hurrah!

I cannot believe it, but I went into the bathroom to get sorted and the pain level just dropped to something reasonable. I am still having problems with deep breaths, but I am now convinced that it was muscular. I can now get on with the day so long as it doesn't recur.
Back to reading stuff about the OU course.

Up at 5:00 am for painkillers and a shower. I will have to call the GP today as this can't go on.

Almost seemed like I was having a heart attack, the pain was so intense and localised in the right hand side of my chest and down my left arm. This is one of those times when it is useful to have a Wife lying next to you in bed...
The fact that she has been a Nurse for the past 30 plus years helps...

After the Weekend
Pain Level at this time is 6.
Had a great W/E starting Friday. Went for the Sabbath Meal to Judith and Mike. Their neighbours where there and all had a good time.
Busy day Saturday and the the Evening came and out with the boys. Nice Time was had by all, until the local psychopath decided to come over to give us all the benefit of his giant intellect and humanism. was a wonderful end to the day.
Sunday went to the Family Fun day out at Gosforth Park for NHS Fleet Cars. was actually quite good, but the shortlist of cars we are looking at has become a 'long' list.
Unfortunately up at 3:00 am with the pain going through bloody roof. Happy, I don't think so...
Enjoyed the W/E but not the Monday Morning. I'm sick of getting up early with this pain. I have decided that I will force today to be a good one, but I think sleepers tonight so I can get a good night.
My Pain Score better reduce, or I'm going to tell myself off.

Day out
After the fun and games last night, more about that later, we are going to an NHS phun day at Gosforth Park Race Course. I'm 'quite' looking forward to it.
Last night was great, from 7 until about 10:20, when we were suddenly introduced to a nice man who really liked my shirt as he used to have one just like it. Except his had some lettering on the breast that said 'HMPS'. NICE or what?
There is something I really enjoy about sitting in company with a drunken, psychopathic bully, full of pent up rage and anger, who is looking for a fight. It is at times like these when the wheelchair becomes useful as a diffusing device. However when it came time to go I was worried about leaving the others there, so I ended up staying longer than intended.
Surprising that the pain score is so low today, after late to bed and not sleeping so well. But then again I did sleep in until almost 7:30 today, so that helped.

Out tonight with the boys
I'm going out for the monthly pubfest avec the boys. Unfortunately as I'm the one with the wheelchair I am usually the designated driver.
However I'm looking forward to visiting the new pub in Killy.
I always enjoy the banter as Dave is mad, my son Mike is a good wind up merchent and Phil is easy to wind up. Roll on the Shandies.
I am giving the study of the forthcoming OU course a rest, as I think I may be getting ahead of the game, before the game has even started. It would be funny to have to un-learn something, ending up with less time to do the real thing once it starts. Can't wait for the first mailing

Getting sorted too early?
I am due to embark on the OU's AA100 The Arts Past and Present in just over a months time. However I seem too eager and want to start now. I am perusing bulletin boards and looking for suitable sources to follow, but all to no avail. Until I get my first mailing I am stuck. The mailing is not due until next week, but this apprehension is just like waiting for Christmas as a child.
Had to take sleeping tablets last night as the back was letting me know it was still there. When it gets like that I am unable to do much at all.
I hate giving in to it.
Had to take sleeping tablets last night as the back was letting me know it was still there. When it gets like that I am unable to do much at all.

My Potted History.
Born in 58 (Yes that old), I was not to discover that others where different to me until I was in my 20's. I was born with a back problem that causes pain after exercise. As a child I ran, climbed and did all the usual things. As I got older I was into Athletics, Rugby, Judo and Ballroom Dancing. I also got involved with Drama before leaving school at 16 to do an Engineering Apprenticeship. I was already with my beloved by this time, after 'going out' with each other since the age of 14.
By the time we Married I was starting to have a few health problems which got all mixed up with the hospital visits that never gave a definitive answer. Eventually I had an x-ray that seemed to show something on my spine and thankfully a diagnoses finally arrived. Congenital Spondylolitheses. Nice, not!
I was then able to understand that others did not have the pain I was feeling. It was not a normal side effect of exercise.
Eventually I was unable to walk properly and had to have a Fusion of the spine.I was told that I would end up in a wheelchair eventually, but that was 15 or so away. I managed just over 20 before the hateful day.
During that time we have had a family and I have worked in various industries, but eventually ended as a Teacher of Physics, until I was no longer able to work.
I'm now starting the new part of my life, by starting a degree with the Open University in History. Just for a change...
